It's a cold day in paradise

For us in NW Florida it was chilly this morning, 41 degrees F, and that's about 5 degrees C, I guess.

Every bit of the Christmas shopping is done. Everything is wrapped, sent or hand delivered. All the Christmas cards are mailed. And except for those late cards from the late people I forgot, I could put the cards away until next year. But I'll wait.

Spent much of the morning working on the pool, cleaning the sides and vacuuming the bottom. I seems strange, as a newcomer to pool maintenance, that even though the pool is 50 degrees right now and we haven't been able to swim in it since October 1, it still gets dirty and needs work. But not as much work as it does in the hot weather. Of course when the weather turns warm we can enjoy the pool every day. With luck by the second week in May we can jump in and not have a coronary from the chill.

Back in California we sometimes went up to CalArts to swim on Christmas Day or on New Year's. But that pool was heated year-round, even during school vacations. Why, it was heated so well that you didn't even need a swimsuit.

Blogger replies again

Yesterday I got a reply from Blogger. Remember a few days ago the bottom half of my blog got chopped off? I had asked Blogger Help to tell me what happened. And more importantly how to avoid it happening again.

The first reply from Blogger was to tell me to read through the help screens again because I must have missed the solution to my problem. I carefully re-read the help screens and then I asked again for Blogger Help.

Like the first reply, the second reply -- not to "Dear First Name" or any name at all, but to "Hi There" -- said I should look again even more carefully through Blogger Help. They said they are way too busy with help requests to offer timely, personal assistance and thanked me for my patience.

Now I will wait to see if I get non-timely assistance or none at all.

My blog is working. Do flu shots work?

The blog is still up and running I am happy to say. I have no idea what I did to break the original. And no idea of how to avoid it happening again. Not one further word from Blogger to help me out so far either.

I did get myself to Pensacola Junior College early Wednesday morning for my flu shot. The shots were scheduled from 9:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. I got there at 8:30 to be at the front of the line. The nurses were just setting up in the Student Center. One of them said they were ready and handed me a form to fill out, took my $25 and stuck me with a needle. I was out of there 30 minutes before they were scheduled to begin.

Do the shots work? I hear that in some years the protection in the shot is not effective for this year's variety of flu. The health officials said get the shot. First it would probably keep you from getting the winter's flu. Also, as a bonus, by avoiding the coming flu you would be stronger and more able to handle the bird flu pandemic, if and when we have the bird flu pandemic. Perhaps.

Funny thing at Pensacola Junior College, unlike every other community college I ever heard of, there appear to be no parking problems. If you are a student or work there you need a parking decal. Apparently it's free.

Starting over, Part 2

Yesterday I made a few tiny changes to my blog settings. Then I republished the blog. And it was gone. Replaced by raw code. All that unmentionable CSS code. For all you blessedly simple heatrted folks who just have fun on your computers, CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. The raw code is ugly looking and it's the Internet equivalent of that slime dripping space monster from Aliens.

Somehow either the Blogspot.com program or my meddling had totally erased the bottom half of my template. It wasn't even an HTML page anymore.

I sent a message to the Blogger folks and they wrote back they were sure my problem was covered somewhere in their help pages. Perhaps if I wanted the problem fixed I had better get to lookin' through their site real good.

Assuming that they say this to get rid of 99 percent of the help emails they get everyday, I replied that I had indeed looked real good. And please have some live person help me.

I didn't have much time because I was off to the dentist to have my teeth cleaned and the problem gums scraped with some sharp metal pointy things.

Later I killed off the original blog and now you have version 2. No relpy from Blogger, yet.

Starting over

As God is my witness, I will never have a blog that is not backed up on my own disk. Unlike last time...

At least I kept good notes on formats and colors.
